First time reading something by this author and she did not disappoint! Great characters, interesting plot and a good mystery. The author has a gift for creating a lot of tension that puts the reader on the edge of their seat. I wished she'd use the atmosphere of Edinburgh more because it left me wanting more. The other characters in the book show a great deal of promise for future books in what will certainly be a series and I really look forward to the next book! Detective Mallory Atkinson of Vancouver is a believable and interesting person and I really liked the fact that Dr. Duncan Gray was of mixed race and parentage and is a very sympathetic and interesting character who whose idiosyncrasies and interactions with Mallory will certainly develop in the series. Looking forward to seeing how the intelligent and courageous Isla continues to work on breaking free of VIctorian expectations for a "grieving widow"
