I AM GOD’S DREAM is a children’s book written in first person that walks the reader through, frankly, what it’s like to be human. The playful rhyme scheme and expertly crafted turns of phrase contained in these pages show me two things: (1) This book is not Matthew Paul Turner’s first rodeo; he has absolutely earned his sticker on the cover as a #1 New York Times Bestseller and (2) Turner has a message here worth shouting from the rooftops and knew the best medium for the message was this book. It had to be this children’s book. The thing I love most about I AM GOD’S DREAM is the fact that it is a book of lovely self-affirmation but it’s not content to just stop there: I would say Turner’s message is ultimately most about empowerment, to love the self God made you and to help others find that same beauty in themselves. Knowing a bit of his personal journey of faith, identity, and everything in between over the years, I would infer that Turner created this book from experience, perhaps sharing exactly the message he would’ve wanted to hear as a child. In conclusion, I’ll say this until I’m blue in the face: Just like how every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings, every time someone reads Matthew Paul Turner to a child, years of religious trauma are avoided. As someone with an often complicated relationship with Christianity, reading this book even as an adult provided a simple, comforting reminder that will sit with me for a while: I am God’s dream.
