1) dave has a way of drawing you towards his characters and liking them while still reminding you that it isn't a safe place. they aren't thrown away cheaply fit shock value but rather as a reminder that they put their lives on the line constantly. 2) this is more a matter of preference than anything but the humour in his books leans towards jokes told/banters, situations people find themselves in, and the sprinkling of reference that gives you pops of joy as your brain goes, "i understood that reference" rather than in your face "hyuk-hyuk wink wink nudge nudge get it? get it? huh? huh?" or snark-as-a-substitute-for-actual-wit style. some prefer one over another while others enjoy both. 3) my favourite thing about willmarth's books is MC is intelligent but far from perfect or all knowing. allistor professes to be a gamer and, when presented a world with game-like mechanics, attempts to make the best decisions he can with what he knows. are they all perfect? no. will you,as the reader agree with all of it? probably not. but you can understand that he is making the best and most (or at least what he perceives to be the most) intelligent choices he can given what he knows and his circumstances. that, for me, is all i ask. i haven't said much about this specific book but it's the continuation and conclusion of a terrific series do i don't feel that is particularly needed. it has the same good writing and cleanliness of edit that you expect from a dave willmarth book. highly recommended.
