NEW FOR 2022 – STAND-ALONE, #19 IN THE SERIES. MEET MAVERICK BRITISH DETECTIVE DI SKELGILL... "A COMPELLING BRITISH CRIME MYSTERY." EVIL LIES UNDETECTED When shepherd Jud Hope finds an American passport in a fox’s earth, a connection is made to an unidentified fatality – an elderly female walker who fell to her death in a treacherous rocky gill near Ambleside. Meanwhile, a spate of ‘nighthawker’ incidents sees ancient monuments desecrated under cover of darkness. The spotlight falls upon Derek Shaw, a museum curator exploring Cumbria’s Roman heritage. Onto this stage emerges a second senior American hiker, Dorothy Baum. The intrepid Dorothy is here to meet her online sweetheart, Professor Felix Stowe-Upland, an expert in classical archaeology. But when Felix fails to materialise, Dorothy falls in with an eccentric walking companion, ‘Kooky Cathy’, as she comes to call her. Derek Shaw seems to be shadowing the pair. Felix remains elusive, stringing Dorothy along with promises of his arrival. Skelgill and his team realise Dorothy is in jeopardy. But they are two steps behind and the clock is ticking. She is somewhere in the fells, but where? The chain of Roman forts that she follows stretches from Ravenglass on the southwest coast, to Penrith in the far northeast. And Dorothy seems to be covering her tracks. "Great characters. Great atmospheric locale. Great plots. What's not to like?" Amazon Reviewer, 5 Stars Read more

It's always so wonderful to return to Lakeland and the fictional world of DI Skelgill and his two loyal sergeants, DS Leyton and DS Jones. This book, the 19th in the series, did not disappoint. Beckham always tries something a little new with each book, which adds to their interest. In Murder in the Fells, his detectives are on a mission to prevent a second murder, once they have identified the first victim. As always, Beckham writes in the present tense, which gives the books an immediacy that I love, as though they are happening in the moment. His writing, I feel, is very cinematic, in the sense that his stories are very visual and would lend themselves to a screenplay. The characters are well-drawn and appealing, and the dialogue is rich and entertaining as well. What I love most about his writing, though, is that he is a consummate wordsmith, always surprising and delighting me with an unexpected turn of phrase. I found the plot of this newest book to be intricate, unpredictable, and engaging. And, as always, Beckham's descriptions of the natural world are superlative. He gets my highest recommendation.
