NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “A fine legacy series . . . in the spirit of her late father, Tony.”— Booklist An ancient mystery resurfaces with ramifications for the present day in this gripping chapter in the Leaphorn, Chee & Manuelito series from New York Times bestselling author Anne Hillerman. Sergeant Jim Chee’s vacation to beautiful Antelope Canyon and Lake Powell has a deeper purpose. He’s on a quest to unravel a sacred mystery his mentor, the Legendary Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, stumbled across decades earlier. Chee’s journey takes a deadly turn when, after a prayerful visit to the sacred Rainbow Bridge, he spots a body floating in the lake. The dead man, a Navajo with a passion for the canyon’s ancient rock art, lived a life filled with many secrets. Discovering why he died and who was responsible involves Chee in an investigation that puts his own life at risk. Back in Shiprock, Officer Bernadette Manuelito is driving home when she witnesses an expensive sedan purposely kill a hitchhiker. This is the seventh book in this series. It features Jim Chee and his wife Bernadette Manuelito. Jim is on vacation hiking the area around Lake Powell and the Rainbow Bridge. He is trying to decide what he wants to do with his career. He discovers a dead man in Lake Powell. He becomes intrigued by this man’s life and curious about how he died. Meanwhile back in Shiprock, Bernie witnesses a man being run over on her way to work. This man has no identification and is suspected to be from a new hemp farm in the district. Bernie feels compelled to find out who he is and why he was killed. This leads to her going undercover at the hemp farm. Both these cases mirror each other at first. And we see how both Chee and Manuelito are dedicated to their jobs. They both feel a duty to help their people. And we see their different ways to approach these cases. I love how these two grow closer and have a deeper understanding not just of each other but in their extended families and friends. I can hardly wait to see what comes next. The audiobook is invaluable in helping me learn pronunciation of the Navaho words. And the Glossary is narrated by Peter MacDonald Sr. He is a World War I code talker.
