Chéri and The End of Chéri by Colette

An exquisite new translation of Colette’s tragicomic masterpiece, a pair of novels exploring the relationship between an aging courtesan and a much younger man. ChĂ©ri and its sequel, The End of ChĂ©ri , mark Colette’s finest achievements in their brilliant, subtle, and frank investigations of love and power. Set in the Parisian demimonde in the last days of the Belle Ăpoque, ChĂ©ri tells the story of LĂ©a, a courtesan at the end of a successful career, and her lover, the beautiful but emotionally opaque ChĂ©ri. ChĂ©ri will soon enter into an arranged marriage, ending their six-year affair, which―they will each realize too late―has been the one real love of their lives. The End of ChĂ©ri picks up their story in the aftermath of the First World War. ChĂ©ri, now a decorated soldier, has returned from the trenches to a changed world. Emotionally estranged from his independent and unfaithful wife, a psychically wounded ChĂ©ri begins an inexorable descent―one that leads him back to a stunning encounter with LĂ©a. As the acclaimed writer and translator Lydia Davis puts it in an illuminating foreword, Rachel Careau’s “brilliantly ingenious, close new translation” reveals ChĂ©ri and The End of ChĂ©ri as “the strangest of love stories.” Colette skillfully portrays her characters’ shifting inner lives and desires amid a clear-eyed depiction of interpersonal power dynamics. Careau’s lean, attentive translation restores to these classic novels their taut, remarkably modern style―the essence of Colette’s genius. Read more
Deceased Parisian author, Colette's, CHERI (1920) and THE END of CHERI (1926) are widely considered two masterpieces. Written in the 1920s, both books (in one book) tell the story of a middle aged courtesan (Lea) and her much younger lover (Cheri). In a new publication, the two books are condensed into one, have been translated by Rachel Careau and published by W.W. Norton & Company. Lea and Cheri have been involved for many years, but it's time for him to move on with his life. When he returns from WWI, he marries but soon is drawn back to former lover, Lea who misses him. But in order to resume their affair, they both have to face the fact the affair will inevitably end. Cheri is older and has been through a war and Lea has aged and physically changed dramatically. Memories of the past are lost in the present. Rachel Careau's translation of Colette's two novels bring together sensuality and brilliant prose. Lydia Davis writes in the foreward, that Colette's writing was so talented, Virginia Wolff felt her writing was inferior. Colette's books make me sad. The characters growing old somehow dismiss the love they experienced many years ago. I'm going to read these books again.
